Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits is the second greatest hits compilation by the British rock band Dire Straits , released on 19 October 1998 by Mercury Records internationally, and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. The album was originally released, featuring liner notes by Robert Sandall , as both a one-disc edition and two-disc edition. The second disc contains live performances. The release is named after the band's 1978 hit single of the same name. The compilation was re-released together with a DVD in 2002. The DVD features the music videos of all the songs on the first disc, in addition to short interviews with Mark Knopfler about each song.

Their most famous songs include Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, and Brothers in Arms. = Dire Straits recorded and released their first, self-titled album in 1978 for £12,500, initially within the UK to little fanfare, but to number one platinum success in the rest of Europe and then the US. With Brothers still riding the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, Knopfler continued pursuing his own projects, appearing on Joan Armatrading's The Shouting Stage , co-producing Randy Newman's Land of Dreams , and recording with his idol, country guitar master Chet Atkins. (To date, Knopfler and Atkins have won three Grammys for their duet recordings.) In 1988, following appearances at Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Party concert at Wembley Stadium and Knopfler's tour with Eric Clapton, Dire Straits went on a two-year hiatus.
